FREEDIVING ON SURIN ISLAND, THAILAND |

Freediving is for the free souls.

If you happen to be on one of Thailand’s most beautiful diving spots with a friend who is a freediving expert then you are in luck.  “Mu Koh Surin”, officially named  “Surin Islands National Marine Park”, has a phenomenal range of corals and sea animals.  As a first-timer hence a complete beginner at Freediving without any experiences in Scuba diving, I felt incredibly blessed to be learning to do it here.

My friend, my dreadlocked partner-in-crime and my now Dive Master Tommy encouraged me to just go ahead and jump into the ocean with my snorkel, a pair of diving boots and diving fins.  He told me he would hold my hands and all I need to do is just to keep my body straight, relax and take really, really long deep breath.

Clueless and somewhat nervous me and Tommy with an injured foot.

Tommy said “With Freediving you need to be free.  You need to be calm, focus on your deep and slow breath and feel it throughout your body.  Don’t rush, don’t panic.  Just relax and enjoy the ride.”

And before I knew it I was, along side with Dive Master and my childhood friend, soaring through the cool blue ocean.  Flora and fauna of the sea danced freely before our eyes, greeting us with their beautiful vibrant colours.  It was slow and quiet.  It was as if we were shifted into a different dimension where time didn’t exist.  It was beautiful.

The most important thing with Freediving (well, with pretty much everything else in life) is safety. Here are some standard tips for anyone who wants to give it a try:

  1. Always calm yourself down before going down each time.  Do not dive down if you are nervous or panicking.
  2. Take a couple of long and deep breaths *sloooooowly* before you go down to prepare your body.
  3. Take the snorkel out of your mouth after your last breath and right before you dive down.  If you are a beginner, sometimes your body’s natural reflect tells you to breathe through your mouth.  Therefore it is important to keep your mouth closed.
  4. Do not forget to equalise your ears.  I do it as soon as my head goes under water, and also every 5 seconds or so I you go down.  The water pressure can hurt your ears faster than you think.
  5. Try to keep your body straight and perpendicular to the surface of the water when you first dive down.  It’s easier to dive down when doing so.
  6. Do not rush.  There is no need to race.  Keep your legs rather straight and move them slowly like scissors rather than kicking.
  7. Don’t push yourself too much on your first day.  Once you feel more comfortable with freediving, start to push yourself little by little.  When you feel you need to come up to breathe, try staying for 5 seconds longer…or so.  You’ll be surprised how human body can adjust itself to new situations!
  8. It is ok to release some air underwater if you feel you need to–through your mouth though.  However I am yet to discover if releasing air furiously through a different channel on my other end would make me go faster…I would have to point it in the accurate direction though….
  9. Leave the sea animals alone, and do not touch any corals, sea fans or anemones.  Most of them are poisonous, but more importantly let’s not damage or steal our planet earth’s gorgeous creations.
  10. Remember this: Never dive alone; always dive with a dive-buddy who knows how to freedive well.

And that’s pretty much it!  If anyone has a chance to visit Surin Island, or any diving spots in the world, do consider learning to freedive.  It is not difficult or expensive.  It’s a great way to experience the amazing underwater world and it’s good for the mind, body and soul!
