Despite the fact that there have been more and more tourists visiting the island, the Mokens are truly island childs still. In this blog I have put together a few footage and images of them doing their “Moken things”: building huts, fishing, picking up wild fruits in the woods, and simply chillin’!
ถึงแม้ว่าในหลาย ๆ ปีที่ผ่านมา มีนักท่องเที่ยวพรั่งพรูกันไปเยี่ยมหมู่เกาะสุรินทร์มากขึ้น แต่ชาวมอแกนก็ยังรักษาวิถีชีวิตดั้งเดิมของเค้าไว้อยู่ตลอดเวลา ในโพสนี้บีรวบรวมวีดีโอและรูปการใช้ชีวิตต่าง ๆ ของชาวมอแกนมาให้ดูกันนะคะ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการจับปลา เก็บผลไม้ป่า สร้างกระท่อม รวมไปถึงยามมอแกนชิวด้วย ลองดูกันค่ะ 🙂
According to them, there are 3 major groups of “population” in this village: the Seniors, the Teenagers and the Kids.
Even they now have a much easier access to mainlands (hence our usual everyday essentials, technology, etc.), they still retain most of their original Moken way of living. Girls still play games using pebbles and make bracelets out of flower stalks. Boys can pretty much help their fathers drive small motor boats by the age of 8 and help others fixing boats and building huts by the age of 12.
ชาวมอแกนมีการแบ่งกลุ่มประชากรกันออกไป 3 กลุ่มนะคะ คือ พวกผู้ใหญ่ พวกวัยรุ่น และพวกเด็ก ๆ แม้ตอนนี้ชาวมอแกนสามารถติดเรือสปีดโบ๊ทไปซึ้อของในเมืองบนฝั่นได้ง่ายขึ้นกว่าคราวก่อนเยอะ แต่เด็ก ๆ ก็ยังละเล่นเกมส์พื้นบ้านพื้นเมืองอยู่เหมือนเดิม เด็กผู้หญิงยังเล่นกระโดดยาง หมากเก็บ ส่วนเด็กผู้ชายพอ 8 ขวบก็เริ่มไปช่วยพี่ ๆ พ่อ ๆ ลุง ๆ ขับเรือหาปลา และช่วงสร้างบ้านตั้งแต่สิบกว่าขวบแล้วค่า
Out of these ~200 Mokens on this island, around 30 “teenagers” work as boat crew for boat tour companies in Phuket and Phang-Nga provinces, and send their income to support their families. They work for 6 months each year and base on mainland, but stay in their island village for another 6 months during the Monsoon season.
Here is their tradition: the male Teenagers build huts of every family on the island, whether or not they are related to the families. As this is a very close community, each night the males Teenagers could then stay at any hut they wish to (as long as the families allow them to). The female Teenagers, though, live with their parents until they get married. Once a couple get married, the husband builds his own hut—with help from his fellow teenagers. The wife moves in to their new home, but that love nest is also a home for the husbands brothers.
ในจำนวนชาวมอแกนร้อยกว่าคนนี้ มีเด็กวัยรุ่นประมาณ 30 คนที่ทำงานเป็นเด็กเดินเรือให้บริษัททัวร์ต่าง ๆ ในจังหวัดภูเก็ตและพังงา โดยพวกเค้าจะทำงานปีละ 6 เดือน และอยู่ประจำเกาะอีก 6 เดือนช่วงมรสุมของทุกปีค่ะ
เด็กวัยรุ่น (ผู้ชาย) จะช่วยกันสร้างบ้านกระท่อมทุก ๆ หลังบนเกาะ โดยไม่จำเป็นว่าพวกเค้าต้องเป็นญาติกันหรือไม่ เพราะชนเผ่านี้เป็นชนเผ่าที่เหนียวแน่นกันมาก แต่ละคืนเด็กวัยรุ่นจะเวียนกันไปนอนบ้านผู้ใหญ่คนโน้นคนนี้ และผู้หญิงจะอยู่บ้านพ่อแม่จนกระทั่งแต่งงาน และพอเด็กวัยรุ่นคนไหนแต่งงานเมื่อไหร่ เค้าจะต้องสร้างบ้าน และบ้านของเค้านั้นก็จะมีน้อง ๆ ของเค้ามาร่วมพักอาศัยด้วย (แต่น้อง ๆ คงให้เวลา Honeymoon กับพี่ ๆ กันก่อนซักพักอ่ะนะ) #PG18
The majority of the male Seniors reside on the island and only go fishing in nearby areas. Their wives mainly “hunt for food” on shore, picking crabs, molluscs, vegetables and cook them for the family. They also become mothers of beautiful and free-spirited Mokens at a rather young age.
ส่วนใหญ่ผู้ชายผู้ใหญ่จะพักประจำอยู่บนเกาะ และออกเรือหางยาวไปจับปลาในบริเวณใกล้ ๆ ส่วนผู้หญิงมอแกนจะออกหาอาหารตามหินตามหาด เก็บปูเก็บหอย เก็บผัก และรับหน้าที่ทำอาหารให้ครอบครัวกิน และยังมีลูกกันตั้งแต่วัยสาว ๆ อีกด้วย 🙂
Over the past few years, there have been volunteering teachers teaching Thai language and basic maths for Moken children on the island. Recently, every time my friends and I visit the village, we bring them food, medicine, daily essentials. We have also started teaching them basic English as well as art!
ในปีที่ผ่าน ๆ มา เริ่มมีครูอาสาจากบนฝั่งเข้าไปสวนหนังสือให้กับเด็ก ๆ มอแกนบ้างแล้ว และเมื่อเร็ว ๆ นี้ เวลาบีกับเพื่อน ๆ ไปเที่ยวหมู่เกาะสุรินทร์ พวกเราจะซื้ออาหาร ยา และของที่จำเป็นในชีวิตประจำวันไปฝากน้อง ๆ เพื่อน ๆ บีเริ่มสอนน้อง ๆ พูดและอ่านเขียนภาษาอังกฤษกันแล้วด้วย!
At the moment, we are working on some fundraising activities to help improve the quality of life of the Mokens. We see that this community faces the same problems every year during the 6-month Monsoon period: insufficient food supply, poor hygiene and lack of educational materials. While having no intentions in changing their traditions and lifestyle, we aim to help them fix these problems.
