One of the most unexplored paradise islands of Thailand is Surin Island National Park in the Andaman Sea.  Locally known as “Mu Koh Surin”, this hidden gem is an archipelago of five islands 60km from Phang-Nga province on the West Coast.  Being a 100% Thai native, I have been to many beautiful places in Thailand.  But what has made Mu Koh Surin my all-time-favourite destination?

หมู่เกาะ ๆ กลุ่มหนึ่งในประเทศไทย ซึ่งนับว่ายังไม่ค่อยได้มีคนเยี่ยมเยียนมากอันดับต้น ๆ นั้นก็รวมไปถึงหมู่เกาะสุรินทร์ด้วยนี่เองค่ะ  หมู่เกาะสุรินทร์นี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของจังหวัดพังงา  นั่งเรือ Speed Boat ประมาณ 60 กม. หรือเกือบ ๆ 2 ชั่วโมงก็ถึงแล้ว (บีแนะนำใช้บริการของบริษัท Love Andaman นะคะ ขึ้นเรือที่ท่าทับละมุที่ อ.เขาหลัก ค่ะ)  ทีนี้ลองมาดูเหตุผลหลัก ๆ กันดีกว่าว่าทำไมหมู่เกาะสุรินทร์ถึงชนะใจบีไปอย่างสุด ๆ 

And now, my little summary on the reasons Surin Island could be your next dream vacation.

1.  The highly secluded, peaceful and incredibly stunning beaches.

Unlike Phuket, Phi Phi or Koh Phangan (the home of Full Moon party), Mu Koh Surin is not at all flooded with people–even during high season.  There are a few beaches on the North Surin island, and I still managed to find some corners just to myself on every single beach I went to.

2. The underwater world and its phenomenal range of flora and fauna.

Being rather far from mainland compared to most other islands, Mu Koh Surin is known amongst the locals as one of the most untouched islands in Thailand.  It is filled with colourful corals and sea animals… manta rays, moray eels, giant box fish, sea turtles—you name it.  If you are lucky you’ll be able to spot some sharks too (apparently not the dangerous ones…!!!).  The best part is the fact that visitors don’t always need to hop on a boat to get to these diving sites–some of them are only about 1 km swim from the beach front!  (My friends and I always prefer to swim out.)

หมู่เกาะสุรินร์มีโลกใต้น้ำที่สมบูรณ์มากที่สุดแห่งนึงในประเทศไทย คงเป็นเพราะเป็นเกาะที่ไกลออกจากแผ่นดินมากหน่อยด้วย ปะการังใต้น้ำจึงยังสวยงามอุดมสมบูรณ์อยู่มาก และมีปลาและสัตว์น้ำเยอะแยะมากมาย บีเห็นมาหมดแล้วทั้ง ปลากระเบนแมนตา ปลาไหลยักษ์ ปลาปั๊กเป้า ปลาสิงโต เต่าทะเล แม้แต่ฉลามว่าย ๆ อยู่ขณะที่บีดำน้ำอยู่ก็เคยเจอมาแล้ว!!!

3. The surrounding nature.

Many islands in Thailand have incredible beaches, but not all of them are surrounded by thick forests.  There is a plenty of shade and big trees which you can climb on and mangrove forests where you can spot baby sharks practise swimming in the morning.  There is also a “natural trail” for those who like a bit of hiking.  The 2km takes you through the woods on a hillside between the two main beaches (with a few really quiet mini beaches along the way!).

ธรรมชาติที่สวยงามบนเกาะ  ในประเทศไทยมีเกาะสวย ๆ เยอะมากค่ะ แต่บางเกาะเวลาไปเราไปแวะเที่ยว จะมีที่นั่งพักหลบแดดไม่มาก บนเกาะสุรินทร์เหนือฝั่งอุทยานนี้ ที่ให้วิ่งเล่นให้ซนได้เยอะมาก ไม่ว่าจะเป็นป่าโกงกางที่ตอนเช้า ๆ ลูกปลาฉลามจะมาหัดว่ายน้ำกัน (มันไม่กัดค่ะ น่ารักมาก)  หรือเส้นทางศึกษาธรรมชาติที่ยาวประมาณ 2 กม. เชื่อมระหว่างอ่าวช่องขาดและหาดไม้งาม โดยบนเส้นทาง 2 กม. นี้เราเดินขึ้นเขาเข้าป่าไป แต่จะมีหาดเล็กหาดน้อยระหว่างทางให้เราได้อยู่พักด้วยค่ะ

4. The Moken Sea Gypsy and their Village

While North Surin Island serves as the visitors’ main excursion and accommodation site, the South Surin Island is home to the “Mokens”.  The Moken Sea Nomads are an ancient nomadic sea people who have lived between the Mergui archipelago of Burma and the islands of Thailand’s North Andaman coast for thousands of years.  These free-spirited sea gypsies still retain their traditions and Moken way of living until today.  Visiting the village and spending time getting to know them is definitely one of my most favourite things to do at Mu Koh Surin.

ในขณะที่เกาะสุรินทร์เหนือซึ่งเป็นฝั่งอุทยานจะเป็นเกาะที่ถือว่าเป็น basecamp ของผู้ที่แวะไปท่องเที่ยว (นอนเต้นท์ไม่ก็บ้านพักอุทยานค่ะ) เกาะสุรินทร์ใต้นี่คือ “บ้าน” ของชาวมอแกนนั่นเอง ชาวมอแกนคือชาวเลโบราณที่อยู่ในช่วงมหาสมุทรอันดามันระหว่างประเทศไทยและพม่ามาเป็นพันปีแล้ว เค้ามีภาษามอแกนของเค้าเอง แต่บางคนก็พูดภาษาไทยได้ค่ะ บีชอบไปดูวิถีชีวิตมอแกนที่ยังคงเดิมอยู่มากเลย ทางอุทยานอนุญาติให้นักท่องเที่ยวแวะไปเยี่ยมหมู่บ้านระหว่างวันได้ แต่ต้องออกจากเกาะก่อนตอนเย็นนะคะ

5.  The Surrounding Islands

Apart from over 10 diving spots close to Surin Islands, there are a few small islands only 20-25 mins by boat from Surin main islands.  Though you can’t step foot of these islands, but they are great snorkelling / freediving spots (as they tend to have much less visitors).  Examples of a few islands are below in the form of videos:

นอกจากจุดดำน้ำเป็นสิบจุดรอบ ๆ เกาะสุรินทร์แล้ว ยังมีเกาะเล็ก ๆ ไม่ไกลจากเกาะสุรินทร์มาก ใช้เวลานั่งเรือแค่ประมาณ 20-25 นาทีเท่านั้น ถึงเราจะไม่สามารถขึ้นไปเดินบนเกาะได้ แต่จุดดำน้ำของเกาะเล็ก ๆ นี้จะสวยมาก เพราะจุดดำน้ำจะมีคนน้อยมากเมื่อเทียบกับจุดอื่น ๆ ค่ะ

6.  The Sunset.

In which direction does the sun set?  West!  This is how it is like being on the West side of an island off the West coast of Thailand.  I could do with more evenings like this.

ทิศที่พระอาทิตย์ตกดินนั้นคือทิศไหน?  ทิศตะวันตก! นี่แหละ วิวจากฝั่งทิศตะวันตกของเกาะที่อยู่ทางตะวันตกของประเทศไทยเรา  ถ้าได้เห็นพระอาทิตย์ตกดินสวย ๆ แบบนี้ทุกวันก็คงดีเนอะ

Pretty much enough said!

The only downside about this island (to some people–personally I don’t mind) is the fact that there is no “proper” accommodation.  There are a few bungalows and tents available on the main beaches of the North islands, but there is only electricity between 6pm-10pm.  There are two restaurants on this islands but no shops or convenient stores.  If you forget to bring something from the mainland then you are pretty much in trouble.  Nevertheless, I am happy to announce that the shared toilets are very clean.

บีขอทิ้งท้ายไว้ว่า หมู่เกาะนี้ไม่ได้มีไฟฟ้าตลอดเวลานะคะ จะมีช่วงเย็น ๆ ประมาณ 18.00 – 22.00 ไว้สำหรับให้พวกเราชาร์จกล้องชาร์จมือถือกันบ้าง  และบนเกาะไม่มีร้านค้าอะไร แต่มีร้านอาหารของอุทยาน ซึ่งแม่ครัวอุทยานนี้เป็นเชพขั้นเทพมาก ทำอะไรก็อร่อยไปหมด (ขนาดผัดผักยังสุดยอดเลย) ถ้าใครจะไป ก่อนไปต้องเตรียมซื้อของใช้จิปาถะไว้ให้เรียบร้อยนะคะ ยากันยุงและไฟฉายนี่ห้ามลืมเป็นอันขาด และขอบอกว่านอนเต้นท์สบายค่ะ สะอาด ห้องน้ำอุทยานก็สะอาด เอาจริง ๆ มีเต้นท์ไว้นอนก็พอแล้วค่ะ ไม่จำเป็นต้องไปอยู่โรงแรม 5 ดาว มีสปา มีพูลวิลล่าเลย เพราะความสวยงามของหมู่เกาะสุรินทร์นี่ก็ชนะขาดแล้ว ถ้าใครมาถึงหมู่เกาะสุรินทร์แล้ว ใช้เวลาให้เป็นประโยชน์ ออกไปผจญภัยให้เต็มที่เลยดีกว่าค่ะ 🙂

After all, every single time I have been to this secret little heaven, I am always kept busy being out in the sun and sea from the moment I wake up until when I need to sleep.  There is absolutely no need for a luxurious pool villa or an aromatherapy spa, and the lack of cable TV never bothers me.  Being woken up in a clean tent on the beach by the sound of the ocean waves always makes a fantastic start to my day.  And, lastly, who would want to stick around in a hotel room when you could be out having the best time in the sun in a summer paradise like this?
